The video of a woman and her son being assaulted by her in-laws has shocked the nation. The video caused an uproar on social media among Kenyans, pushing the police to make frantic efforts to arrest the culprits.
The woman identified as mama Kwamboka made desperate efforts crying and pleading to the in-laws to spare her, but her pleas fell on deaf ears as those men continued unleashing canes allover her body.
The heart wrenching video moved social media platforms as Kenyans castigated against the heinous act. Kenyans put aside the current tough economic situation of skyrocketing prices and shortage of petrol and joined hands in agitating for justice for this hapless woman.
Violence against women has become a major concern recently, as some have lost lives to domestic violence. The national police service made the following statement on their Facebook page concerning this heinous act.
“A video clip circulating on social media where an old lady and a young man assumed to be her son are being flogged by an unnamed aggressor has been noted by the National Police Service.
The cruel act victimizing the two for whatever reason is unjustified, unlawful, and cruel. NPS joins outraged Kenyans in condemning the uncalled brutality against the two.
There are legally laid down procedures of settling conflicts between people. The rule of law should always prevail against the rule of the mob in all situations.
The area police officers are handling the matter. We shall therefore share the outcome of their findings in due course”
The culprits have been apprehended and are in custody awaiting to be charged in court. Their images and names have been shared on the National Police service Facebook page.
Domestic violence against women is widespread hence, stern measures should be taken to deter this rampant behavior. A popular musician was recently killed by her pastor husband in Nigerian after enduring the same perennially, hoping that things would get better. Unfortunately, her pastor husband ended up killing her but the culprit has since been charged in court.
Technology has become useful in the fight against domestic violence. It exposes the barbaric acts as the public use their smart phones to capture such heinous acts on videos. The public have also joined hands on social media platforms to share such heart wrenching videos.
The public have also gone an extra mile in agitating against domestic violence. This has pushed governments beyond their comfort zones to act against domestic violence. The rate of domestic violence is declining as prosecution of culprits, and creating awareness is on the rise. The society is widely perceiving it as barbaric.
