In 2002 during presidential campaigns, former president Kibaki was involved in a tragic road accident at Machakos junction, along Nairobi Mombasa highway. Even though President Kibaki seemed conscious, he was severely injured.
After the tragic accident, Hon Raila Odinga drove the ambulance carrying President Kibaki to a Nairobi hospital, for lacking trust on the driver sent to take President Kibaki to hospital.
This is a rare story that has never been shared to the public, after two decades since the tragic accident. Hon Raila Odinga worked tirelessly with compassion to ensure that President Kibaki got the best treatment.
During boarding on his way to London for further treatment, the airline personnel did not provide much assistance needed for Kibaki’s safe boarding. This was due to strict instructions given by Former President Moi’s regime to the airline.
Former president Kibaki and his companions to London were assigned back seats. But Raila said” we can’t put the President at the back of the plane, we must put him first class”. Hon Raila went ahead and paid for first class seats for Kibaki, and his companions to London.
Raila then looked for 8 strong men who carried the stretcher carrying Kibaki to the front, walking on their knees. Hon Raila Odinga has a great heart and has worked tirelessly to make this country a better place for all citizens.
