The police service commission have banned roadblocks in highways, following numerous complains about police demanding bribes from motorists. This is a welcome move to tame the rampant corruption in highways, which has facilitated unworthy vehicles in highways, posing danger to the public.
Most traffic police officers have perennially enriched themselves from bribes. This had consistently escalated unruly drivers, who compromise safety on our roads. Some drivers over speed knowing that they could get away with a bribe.
It was a norm witnessing drivers violating traffic rules, others overlapping or driving in the wrong way. Roadblocks could have been useful, and profitable to the public, if they were properly implemented without rogue officers taking advantage to extort bribes from drivers.
Banning of roadblocks will reduce accidents, and violation of traffic rules. The police commission have made a noble decision to protect Kenyans against road unworthy vehicles and bribes demanded by police officers. Kenyans hope that this decision won’t be short lived.
